Black Sundal kuzhambu

This sundal kuzhambu is my MIL's star recipe...It tastes as flavourful as nonveg kuzhambu...Also it goes well absolutely with anything..idli,dosa, chappathi, rice...and smells fantastic...I used black sundal(not the big white channa) since it has the most nutrients..

Ingredients

  1. Sundal/channa      -1/4 cup
  2. Red onion            -1
  3. Shallots                -3 or 4
  4. Ginger garlic paste-1 tblsp
  5. Tomato                 -1 big
  6. Red chilli powder   -1 tsp
  7. Coriander powder - 2 tsp
  8. Mutton masala powder -2 tsp
To Grind

  1. Coconut pieces-3 tblsp
  2. KasaKasa        -1 tsp
  3. Fennel seeds     -1 tsp
To Temper

  1. Cinnamon Stick-1 inch
  2. Cloves              -2 or 3
  3. Bay leaf            -1
Method

Heat a pan with oil and temper with cinnamon, cloves and bay leaf...Make a paste out of red onion and shallots..

Add the onion paste and ginger garlic paste and salt to the oil and fry for some time...Then add the soaked sundal and fry for a minute...

Now add the red chilli powder, coriander powder and mutton masala powder and fry for some time..Add the tomato and fry till it turns mushy and oil seperates...

Add the grated coconut mixture to it and add required water and cook for 4 whistles and then in low flame for 5 minutes...

Let the gas settle by itself and then open the cooker...check for salt...Thats all now the sundal kuzhambu is ready...
