channa dal chutney/kadalai paruppu chutney/ Side dish for Idly Dosa



This kadalai paruppu chutney is our family's favourite chutney..My mom, grandma,MIL everyone  makes this chutney...Small amount of dhal will give more chutney...so if u r cooking for a big family,it will be very useful...It goes well with both dosa and idli...now let's see the recipe

Ingredients
  1. channa dal/kadalai paruppu-1/4 cup
  2. onion                                 -1/2 onion
  3. Tomato                              -1
  4. red chillies                          -2
  5. perunjeeragam/fennel seeds-1 tsp
  6. coconut(grated or pieces)   -1 tbsp
  7. vegetable oil/refined oil       - 2 tsp

To Temper
  1. Mustard      -1/2 tsp
  2. Urad dal      -1/2 tsp
  3. curry leaves -1 sprig
  4. onion           -1/4 onion

Method
Take a pan and fry the channa dal with little bit of oil till it become golden brown in colour..keep it aside..In the same pan add 1 tsp of oil and add the fennel seed, followed by red chillies, onion and tomato cut into big chunks and fry till tomatoes become mushy...

Remove from heat and let it cool down for some time..In the mixer, put the channa dal and coconut and grind them coarsely..

Add the cooled onion,tomato to the mixer and grind them into a nice paste...Heat a deep pan, and put some oil in it ..Temper with mustard, urad dal and curry leaves...Add onion and fry till it become transparent..


Add the ground paste with required amount of water to the pan and add salt...Let it come to boil and become frothy...Boil for some 5 minutes and nice aroma will arise..

Now the chutney is ready...Enjoy as accompaniment for dosa or idli...
