This is my mom style of making tomato chutney...Instead of the usual sambar, chutney combo,in our side they make this tomato chutney and coconut chutney combo...goes very well with idly,dosa...You can make it as a thicker chutney or in pouring consistency...both ways it tastes good...The recipe here
will provide a mild chutney...You can increase the red chillies snd make it as a hot chutney...Do try and enjoy...
Ingredients

Urad dal | 1 1/2 tblsp |
Red chilli | 2 |
Fennel Seed | 1/4 tsp |
Coconut slices | 2 or 3 |
Roasted gram dal
(Pottukadalai) | 1 tsp |
Tomato | 1 big |
Salt | as needed |
To Temper
Ingredient | Measurement |
Mustard | 1 tsp |
Urad dal | 1 tsp |
Curry leaves | 1 sprig |
Onion | 1/2 small |
Oil | 1 tsp |
Roast urad dal,red chillies and fennel seed with few drops of oil...Add coconut slices and roasted gram dal to it and grind..
To the ground dal, add thr chopped tomato and grind it into a smooth paste...
In a vessel,heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal and curry leaves...Add onion and fry till it become transparent...Add the ground paste and water to it...
Let it boil for a minute, so that raw tomato gets cooked off...Add salt as required....
